As a genetic mutant with immune impairment, autoimmune and skin barrier variants, my childhood was disrupted in 1984 with a major infectious illness connected with exposure to pathogen pollution that was so significant that the ecosystem contamination compelled our family to relocate to a new home, away from the Mississinewa River and streams that I loved so much.

In 1985, my family visited Maui as an extra experience added to my father’s attendance of a carpenter’s union convention in Honolulu. It was then that I experienced the pristine beauty of Napili’s reefs, forever installing my internal vision, a guiding star for aquatic ecosystem restoration that I intended to restore in my own river’s waters... and everywhere!

I returned to Maui in 1999 to witness firsthand significant changes in reef health, refocusing my professional mission to focus on developing solutions that could mediate pollution, restore the beauty of reef systems, and revive this place for Maui natives, and for so many, the source of inspiration for ecosystem health itself.

42 years of water quality experiences, with Maui reefs, directed education, a decade at various NASA laboratories, International Space Station work, focused projects, career moves and research over the decades, culminating in 12 years of leadership in developing solutions…
